Down the Rabbit Hole

Alice in Wonderland

The adventures of Alice in Wonderland, written in 1865 by Lewis Carrol (real name: Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), has been remade numerous times both for the big screen and for television. The first movie based upon the book was a 1903 silent film and the best-known version is probably the 1951 animated Disney adaptation.

The quirky characters who inhabit Wonderland are said to have been inspired by Dodgson's real friends and acquaintances. The story and it's sequel, Through the Looking Glass, remain two of the best-loved stories of all time, and characters like the Mad Hatter, the March Hair, the Queen of Hearts and Alice herself are some of the top selling fairy tale costumes, especially around Halloween -not only for kids but for adults too!

The new, eagerly-awaited Disney production of Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton, is scheduled for release in 2010.
