New Alice Movie – Buy the Hat!

Alice in WonderlandThe long awaited Tim Burton version of Alice in Wonderland is finally here and audiences and critics alike are raving about it!

In another brilliant collaberation between Burton and actor Johnny Depp (as the Mad Hatter), the new Alice movie adds a more distinct plot and storyline of good versus evil (something lacking in the book and previous versions) without losing a shred of the surreal madness. This time, the surreal touches on being just a tad creepy – but we that’s why we love it!

The costumes from this movie are outrageous and fun from the orange-locked Hatter to the big headed Red Queen. Alice’s outfit is still delightfully demure and other characters like Stayne (the eyepatch-wearing knave of hearts), the White Queen, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, Dormouse, the White Rabbit and the Cheshire Cat are creative and delightful.

We think these costumes are going to be a big hit next Halloween and are watching the stores for their arrival. Most are expected in stock the end of the summer and will be available through FairTaleCostumes.net when they are – bookmark our Alice in Wonderland page and check back soon!

Can’t wait to get in on the madness?  Buy the Johnny Depp version of the Hatter’s hat now!

Happy Birthday, Dorothy!

Seventy years ago, MGM released a little film about a girl from Kansas and her little dog, who get swept up in a tornado and transported to a magical, Technicolor land called Oz.

The Wizard of Oz wasn’t a big hit in theaters, but in later years it was televised annually and became a big hit with the baby boomers and gen x’ers who grew up watching it. I remember when I was REALLY little I used to get so-o-o scared when the Wicked Witch of the West appeared (“I’ll get you my pretty – and your little DOG too!”). See? I watched it so often I know most of the dialogue, used to love singing along to the tunes and was no slouch at doing the “Off to See the Wizard” dance too! [Shop for Wizard of Oz Costumes]

Historically, the film symbolizes a transition from a time when most movies were in black and white to the modern world of color films. The Kansas scenes are in sepia-toned black and white, while the Oz scenes are in color – three strip Technicolor, to be exact – which enhances the surreal qualities of Dorothy’s Oz experience.

In honor of the Wizard’s 70’th birthday, Warner Brothers has released several DVD editions of the film, including high-def Blu-Ray and DVD limited editions for collectors. The collector’s box includes poster cards, booklets and even a 70th anniversary watch! It’s the ultimate gift for your favorite Oz fan … or yourself.

Not up for splurging on the collector’s edition? There’s still plenty to love in the regular 70th anniversary edition. Though there are none of the non-digital “extras”, the two DVD’s are jam-packed with goodies, including outtakes, deleted scenes, and (my favorite) a sing-along soundtrack!

2009 Costumes for Men

Probably stating the obvious here, but fairy tale and fairy costumes aren’t nearly as popular with those of the male persuasion as they are with the ladies! Still, many of these men’s costumes can be used for a great couples theme or make to a unique impression on their own (like the outrageous Tooth Fairy costume for men).

Here are a few male fairy tale character outfits that managed to make their way into the list of top selling Halloween costumes:

Hansel

The hunky German lad, all grown up. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, when their father took them into the woods to abandon them for the second time Hansel brought along some bread crumbs (which were subsequently eaten by birds – d’oh!) to mark the way. Actually, if these two kids fell for the “lets go for a walk in the woods” trick a second time, neither one of them was too bright, but they DO make a very a cute couple!

The Mad Hatter

The eccentric dude from Alice in Wonderland with the big top hat who thinks that any time is time for a good tea party, Hatter is always getting himself into trouble with some member of the royal Hearts family. A dark version of the mad hatter is a villain in the Batman comic series – to date, he has never appeared in a Batman film.

Prince Charming

Handsome, rich and powerful, Prince Charming always gets the girl! Sure, he dresses a little on the formal side, but what more could a guy ask for?

Tweedledee and Tweedledum

BFF’s? Brothers? Partners? “Contrariwise!” The propeller-headed duo are a great couples’ costume for any pair who are like 2 peas in a pod (though if you want to be authentic you need to be able to recite the “The Walrus and the Carpenter”)

Like the Mad Hatter, Tweedledee and Tweedledum also have modern counterparts who are villains in the Batman comic series.

Robin Hood

He steals from the rich, he gives to the poor – no, it’s not a politician, it’s Robin Hood, the yeoman leader of a big band of outlaws (but nice ones) in medieval England. Don’t be fooled by those spandex tights, this bow-wielding denizen of Sherwood Forest is a real man!

Other popular men’s costumes with fairy tale themes include the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz (if he only had a brain!), the gingerbread man from Shrek, Disney’s prince Aladdin, and oddly enough, another man in tights – Peter Pan!

2009 Costume Trends

A quick look at this year’s top selling fairytale and storybook costumes for women:

The Queen of Hearts

Whether the queen of hearts who baked some tarts, or the “off with her head” Queen of Alice in Wonderland fame, the bewitching Queen of hearts is one of the most popular character costumes for women, putting it at number 6 in the top 10 list of ALL popular Halloween costumes! There are a bevy of queenly costumes to be found, from sumptuous gowns to saucy short skirted outfits.

Gretel

Also in the top 10 is Gretel. You remember Gretel? She was that little German girl who, along with brother Hansel, was the victim of child abuse when their wicked stepmother convinced their father to abandon them deep in the woods – twice! The second time they met up with a cannibalistic witch who they later murdered in an oven in order to make their escape. (The story does not go on to say how many years those two kids later spent in therapy!)

Mermaid Costumes

What is it about a woman with the tail of a fish that men find so appealing? Whatever it is, mermaids have been beguiling sailors and landlubbers (remember the movie Splash?) for centuries. Mermaids also make the top 10 costume list and are available in realistic, glamorous and sexy interpretations as well as the charming Miss Ariel from Disney’s Little Mermaid.

Classic Storybook Characters – Rewound

Alice in Wonderland, Little Bo Peep, Red Riding Hood, Snow White – icons of childhood innocence portrayed in not-so-innocent or downright twisted costumes for grown-ups. Even Playboy ™ has gotten on board this hot trend, with their officially licenced and unofficially spicey versions of Little Bo Peep, Heidi and Little Red Riding Hood.

Fairy Costumes

Is it the wings and the wand or something more down-to-earth like the short skirted ethereal outfits? Whatever it is, magical fairies (or faeries) are also a highly popular adult costume for Halloween. Sequined sprites, green Neverland beauties and fallen angel, dark or goth fairies are among the bestsellers in this category.

Five Famous Fairies

Call them fairies, wee folk, faeries, sprites or pixies, common folklore has it that fairies are small, gentle, magical winged beings that are otherwise human in appearance. They can be good or evil or a little of both and are thought to travel between the real world and another hidden world of their own. Some believe they are a lower form of angel, others believe they are a hidden race of people, but whatever you believe fairies and their escapades in mythology and literature are downright fascinating!

So how well do you know your fairies? Here, without further ado, are five famous members of the faerie world:

Tinkerbell

“I DO believe in fairies, I DO believe in fairies” … who can forget that suspensful moment from Peter Pan? The lovely Tinkerbell, (originally a mender of pots and pans in the JM Barrie novel, hence her name) said to have been created from a baby’s laugh, is deservedly the most popular and best loved of all fairy characters. Speaking in a language which sounds like the tinkling of a little bell, Tinkerbell (or Tink as she’s sometimes known) bestows upon mortals the gift of flight by sprinkling them with pixie dust.

Fairy Godmother

Sometimes a good fairy, like the one in Cinderella, sometimes a bad fairy like the one in Shrek, the fairy godmother changes the course of peoples’ lives with a wave of her wand. Whether she’s using her powers for good or for evil, the Fairy Godmother is a force to be reconned with!

Ariel

Long before Ariel in the Little Mermaid there was Ariel the airy fairy in Shakespeare’s play, the Tempest. Ariel had been rescued from an evil witch by Prospero the magician, and returned the favor by becoming his loyal servant Unlike other spirits who are forced to obey the magician, Ariel is a willing helper and sort of Prospero’s “spirit in chief”. Ariel uses his musical gifts to put some of Prospero’s enemies into a deep sleep and calls upon his other spritely talents to wreak mischief and confusion upon others.

Puck

Also apearing in a Shakespeare play (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, where he alternately goes by the alias of Robin Goodfellow), Puck is a mischievous woodland fairy of myth and folklore. Puck was said to have wreaked a bit of havoc by souring the milk of unsuspecting dairy farmers and leading nighttime travellers astray as they passed through his woods. Not that he’s all bad – he’s said to do small household chores for his family of choice when he’s in a good mood! However he’s better known for his pranks and practical jokes.

The Tooth Fairy

The eccentric tooth collector who trades money and gifts for baby teeth, the tooth fairy is an authentic turn-of-the-century American creation which has caught on in other countries and cultures. You may be wondering, what exactly does the tooth fairy DO with all those teeth? Some say he/she builds a castle out of them, others say they are thrown into the air, each becoming a little star twinkling in the night sky.
