Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

The story of Snow White, in it's many variations, is believed to have originated in Germany. It was part of the 19th century collection of stories published Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm.

In the tale, Snow White's vain and wicked stepmother is jealous of the girl's beauty and tries to get a hunter to kill her. But the man is unable to do so and Snow White takes refuge at the home of the dwarfs.

The stepmother tries three more times to "do in" her stepdaughter. On the third try Snow White eats a piece of poisoned apple and falls into a deep sleep. The dwarfs, thinking her dead, place her in a glass coffin.

A prince happens by and sees the coffin/princess and begs to have it. On his journey, his carriage hits a rock, the coffin goes flying onto the ground and, a-la Heimlich manouver, the apple is dislodged from Snow White's throat, reviving her. The prince kisses Snow White, the two get married - and yes, they live happily ever after!

There are some different details in the Disney version. First the prince simply kisses Snow White to awaken her. Also, the sad fate which befalls the stepmother in the Grimm version is thankfully missing from the Disney film. The Disney Snow White also added a bunch of cute forest animals and the great tunes we know and love..
